Selena Gomez has recalled how she found Taylor Swift sobbing with pride backstage at the American Music Awards last year after she performed.
Selena Gomez is thankful to Taylor Swift for always encouraging her to find out what makes her different.
The singers have been close friends for the last eight years. As well as having many fun times together, the 23-year-old credits Taylor with being one of her key motivators.
“Taylor’s just been such an incredible inspiration and she’s just like one of my biggest supporters and I don’t think people know that as much as they think that she is,” she told Key 103 radio in Manchester, England. “She has always wanted to see me find what makes me different and never forced her opinion too much; she would just tell me what she believed and what she thinks I should do and I’ve known her for eight years!”
Selena rose to prominence on Disney Channel series Wizards of Waverly Place. In recent years she has carved out a successful singing career with hit singles including Come & Get It. But it was during an emotive performance of The Heart Wants What It Wants at the American Music Awards last year that Taylor struggled to keep her feelings for her friend in check.
“It’s something that we’ve always kind of been in tune with and at the AMAs when I performed The Heart Wants What It Wants she was like sobbing backstage and she’s like, ’I’m so proud of you, that was everything I always wanted people to see about you’, and it’s just like really cool,” she added. “She’s incredible."
Selena was just one of Taylor’s famous female friends to star in her Bad Blood video earlier this year. Taylor has often spoken out about how much her gal pals mean to her and how they help her keep her feet on the ground despite their own fame.
“My group of friends are the most important thing to me right now,” she told People magazine last year. "They are so fun and know me and like me for who I actually am.”
