Josh Hutcherson was astounded when he and his Hunger Games castmates were given armed guards to protect them during a press tour.
Josh Hutcherson thought he was going to be attacked by a swarm of 12-year-old Hunger Games fans after they broke through a barricade.
The final instalment of the smash-hit movie franchise, Mockingjay – Part 2, is due out later this year and features Josh as Peeta Mellark. He’s joined by Jennifer Lawrence and Liam Hemsworth, with the trio discussing their craziest fan encounters with US talk show host Conan O’Brien last night.
“When we went to Rome, they had military police with full-on machine guns with barriers holding back 12-year-old Italians. It was crazy,” Josh recalled. “There was one point where we were down the carpet – we were almost finished – and I looked back and I saw a barricade fall over. My mind just flashed to a hoard of Italian Hunger Games fans sprinting at us.”
Liam added: “It was the first time where I’ve really seen an actual wave of people coming at me, like coming over the top of each other.”
The group love meeting their fans under less stressful circumstances though, adding that all kinds of people seem to get excited about encountering them. In fact, even people who don’t seem to know why they are famous approach them at times. Liam finds that hilarious, joking he’s been asked for photos by people who’ve been completely honest about never watching the films in the past.
Josh has too, but he isn’t so happy with the idea.
“My favourite thing is when they say, ’I’m sorry. They say you’re famous. Can we take a photo?’ I’m like, ‘I don’t think so, man/woman,’” he said.
