Jennifer Aniston took "gentle baby steps" after Friends to allow her fans to follow her journey.
Jennifer Aniston is still in “awe” of Friends.
The actress ’ role as high-maintenance Rachel Green in the hit sitcom propelled her name into the spotlight and won her fans around the globe during its decade-long run.
Despite ending in 2004, the show remains as successful now as it did when it first started out and Jennifer finds it amusing to look back at that body of work.
“Well. I don’t know. I still look back in awe of it. I look at it as something almost other than me,” she told Empire magazine. “It’s funny to think that you were a part of something when you think about it like that. I felt more a part of it when I was in it, obviously, and we were doing it. But now it’s ten years behind us and it almost feels like someone else, if that makes sense.”
That’s not to say Jennifer doesn’t tune into an episode every now and then; her favourite being when Rachel applies for a job at Ralph Lauren and mistakenly kisses her future boss.
Her former co-star Matthew Perry, who played socially awkward Chandler Bing, has often spoken about the frustration he felt at being seen as just his alter ego. Jennifer can sympathise, as she too has had to put up with being referred to as Rachel Green.
“It’s a blessing and a curse. It gave us everything but also gives you more of a challenge, as we were saying, to shape people’s perception of you. It’s ‘Matthew is Chandler Bing and Jennifer is Rachel Green’, so it’s hard for people to even believe that we’re playing other people,” she admitted. “It’s taking gentle baby steps and allowing your fans to grow with you.”
