Sam Smith thinks his multiple Grammy win is “unreal”.
Sam Smith “genuinely didn’t think” he was going to scoop so many awards at the Grammys.
The British singer walked away with four trophies at Sunday’s ceremony including the coveted Record of the Year accolade for Stay with Me. And during an appearance on the Ellen DeGeneres’ chat show on Tuesday, the outcome was clearly still sinking in for the 22-year-old.
“It’s ridiculous," he told the host. "They’re so heavy, as well. It’s unreal. I genuinely didn’t think this was going to happen. It’s incredible. I keep spontaneously crying. I started crying in the shower this morning, like, ‘Oh my God.’ "
As well as Record of the Year, Sam won Best New Artist, Song of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Album for In the Lonely Hour.
It’s no wonder the singer was so surprised by his awards haul considering, by his own admission, that no one batted an eyelid at him when he attended the prestigious event last year. However Sam was quick to add that his newfound success wasn’t down to the fact that he had changed who he was to fit in.
“The most beautiful thing about this whole thing is that I haven’t played a character. … I went on stage and I didn’t rehearse anything that I said last night, it was just a genuine response,” he said proudly.
However the I’m Not the Only One singer did confess to rehearsing the bit in his acceptance speech where he thanked his ex for inspiring his album. He also admitted that he and boyfriend Jonathan Zeizel broke up “about three weeks ago.”
“I couldn’t bring In the Lonely Hour and go to the Grammys with someone,” he joked. “I had to be ‘lonely’ for the Grammys!”
