Katy Perry put on a powerful performance with special guests Missy Elliott and Lenny Kravitz at Super Bowl XLIX.
Katy Perry came out roaring during her Super Bowl XLIX halftime show.
The 30-year-old pop star performed a medley of her greatest hits on Sunday at the University of Phoenix stadium in Glendale, Arizona.
A riveting first half of the football game saw the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks tied at 14 points, and when Katy arrived on the field her presence was equally scintillating.
“Super Bowl, are you ready to roar?” she screamed to the crowd while mounted on a giant, gold mechanical lion in a flame dress designed by Jeremy Scott.
Katy then sang Roar before moving into a vignette for her Dark Horse song, which took place on a giant CGI chessboard. The chess pawns were dancers who pranced around the star as she crooned out the hit. Then a stage magically emerged from the checkerboard and Lenny Kravitz entered the scene singing Katy’s song, I Kissed a Girl. The pair duet onstage with a live band while rocker Lenny is donning a black leather jacket with no shirt underneath.
The set then transforms into a beach setting. Dancing surfboards, sharks, beachballs and beautiful ladies clad in multicoloured polka dot bikinis accompany Katy as she sings her hits, Teenage Dream and California Gurls.
Her surprise special guest Missy Elliott then bursts onto the stage. Katy joins the music legend as they sing Missy’s hits, Get Ur Freak On and Work It. While the 43-year-old rapper performed Lose Control, Katy disappeared for a wardrobe change.
The pop songstress reemerged in a dazzling silver dress made of stars. She closed out the show by floating high into the sky on a moving comet while singing Fireworks and watching sparklers explode from the top of the stadium.
Before the performance took place, Katy spoke of how the Super Bowl gig is a dream come true for her.
“Today is for this girl. She had the dream, always believed in herself & her worth. Today she is the one smiling,” she wrote on Twitter, attaching a photograph of her as a child with a microphone in her hand.
John Legend and Idina Menzel kicked off Super Bowl XLIX by singing America the Beautiful and the National Anthem respectively.
