Ed Sheeran rebuffed 5 Seconds of Summer's offer to temporarily join the band.
5 Seconds of Summer asked Ed Sheeran to fill in for Michael Clifford.
The Australian four-piece were one man down when they took to the stage in London, UK, over the weekend for Capital FM’s Jingle Bell Ball at the The O2 arena.
Luke Hemmings, Calum Hood and Ashton Irwin had to perform without Michael, who was stranded in the States after misplacing his passport. The ingenious rockers had a cunning plan to ensure a smooth show and tried to recruit Ed as a stand-in. However it didn’t quite work out.
“Ed has red hair like Michael, so we would like him to join us on stage. We already asked him but he didn’t respond positively,” Ashton told British newspaper Metro.
The hit makers didn’t let the line-up change deter them though, and put their all into the performance.
It’s been a mammoth year for the group, who saw their debut self-titled album top charts the world over.
Luckily, the Michael-shaped hole left over the weekend will not be a permanent feature.
“We haven’t been rehearsing as a three-piece, which made performing terrifying.
“It’s not preferable with Michael not here. We can’t perform without him, really. It’s not the same,” Ashton sighed.
Touring with One Direction on their Take Me Home and Where We Are Tours gave the boys their first experience of screaming admirers, and now it’s become a regular occurrence.
Last week excited fans managed to jump in their car after a gig, but Ashton doesn’t mind as long as no one gets hurt.
“For their safety it is scary but if they want to say hi, that’s cool,” he smiled.
