Sam Smith: Grammy nomination news was lonely

Sam Smith can't believe he received as many Grammy nods as Beyoncé Knowles.

Sam Smith celebrated his Grammy nominations by drinking champagne alone.

The British singer was overwhelmed on Friday when it was announced he’s in with a chance of winning in six categories – album of the year, best pop vocal album, record of the year, song of the year, best pop solo performance and best new artist.

In keeping with the title of his hugely successful debut album, In the Lonely Hour, the 22-year-old enjoyed a solo celebration.

“I can’t believe I got six. I’m yet to let it all sink in properly. I won’t lie, it was exhausting. You’d think it would be the happiest day of my life but it was weirdly emotional," he confessed to British newspaper The Sun.

“I had one glass of champagne in bed, by myself. It really was in the lonely hour. There was no one with me — I had to make the most of my three hours’ sleep. But tonight I’ll have a bottle of wine in my room with my make-up artist.”

Fellow British singer Ed Sheeran, 23, was also mentioned in Friday’s news; he’s in with a chance of winning album of the year and best pop vocal album with x and best song written for visual media with I See Fire, which featured in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.

“I was with Ed on the day it happened," Sam smiled. "We were so happy. He deserves it so much. He’s one of my closest friends in terms of celebrities.

“We went for lunch and had sushi. But no drink was involved so it wasn’t a proper celebration.”

The only person to match Sam in terms of nominations for next year’s awards is superstar Beyoncé Knowles. He’s not fazed by the fact they’ll face off in the album of the year category.

“I can’t believe I’ve got the same number of nominations as her," he grinned. “I couldn’t have got any more than her, she’d have killed me.

“But in terms of album of the year, I actually hope she gets it. She deserves it, I love that record. I love her too. If I lose to her, I really don’t care.”
