Prince William has advised Ed Sheeran he’d best not sing with English footballer Wayne Rooney ever again.
Prince William has warned Ed Sheeran against performing any further duets with Wayne Rooney.
The 23-year-old singer was captured on video engaging in an impromptu late night singalong with the English football player. And although the rest of the internet found it comical, the Prince apparently didn’t approve.
The Give Me Love hitmaker claims he voiced his opinion when they met at last week’s Royal Variety Performance.
He told British newspaper The Mirror that Prince William laughed, “Er, no more duets with Wayne Rooney,” when he saw him.
The video was made at an after party following one of Ed’s shows. Apparently, the sportsman was an avid fan and was perhaps planning this for some time.
“Rooney’s been trying to come to a gig for three years,” Ed explained. “He actually booked me for his birthday party, but I had a gig the same night. [Wayne’s wife] Coleen came down to my Leeds show, and said Wayne was going to come down to Manchester with a load of mates.”
Coleen went about arranging the late night soiree so her husband could meet Ed. They opted for a small pub, which is where the awkward musical event occurred.
“She asked if I wanted to go out afterwards. I said I didn’t want to go to a club, but Wayne hates clubs as well, so they rented out a lovely dingy pub that just did Jagerbombs and beer,” Ed recalled. “Chris Smalling, Wretch 32 and Example were there, as well as our mates – we had a lock in until 4am. Then I took it back to my hotel room, with everyone and we finished around 7am.”
Most people got to witness the rowdy duet thanks to YouTube. However, Ed is of the opinion that Prince William didn’t actually watch it, and was just told about it in advance so he’d have a talking point.
“I think they have a dude that preps them so they have one thing to mention,” he decided. “He knew something about all the people he met before me – it’s an amazing skill. I was like: ‘Thanks for having me, mate. Nice one.’ I don’t know if they’re fans. Do royals have iPods and things like that?”
