Lopez: My kids save me

Jennifer Lopez doesn’t want her children to have to rely on anyone.

Jennifer Lopez believes in “unconditional love”.

The 45-year-old singer is known almost as much for her private life as her music career thanks to her three failed marriages and high profile relationships with the likes of Puff Daddy and Ben Affleck. However the Booty singer isn’t too downbeat about it because her children, six-year-old twins Max and Emme, have taught her an emotion she never thought existed.

“When I had my children and I felt that type of love, it made me understand that there was a purity to love. That there is an unconditional love,” she explained to the Today Show ahead of the release of her new book True Love. “That there is a certain way you feel about someone, where you don’t want to hurt them. Where you wanna protect them, you know, and it made me go, wait a minute, that’s not the love I’ve been experiencing.”

Jennifer had her children with third husband and fellow singer Marc Anthony. The couple were married for seven years before announcing their separation in 2011 and their divorce was finalised in June this year. While they are on good terms, the Maid in Manhattan actress still finds it tricky to explain the situation to her offspring.

“It’s funny; they asked me about like, what happened with me and their dad. They’re six now. I tell them certain things, and then I say, ‘When you’re older I’ll explain it to you.’ But what I would hope they get from the book is that they save me,” she added. “Their love and loving them and them coming into my life really made me re-evaluate what I was doing with my life, and the relationships and the choices I was making in relationships sometimes, that only had to do with me, not the other person."
