Iggy Azalea storms AMAs noms

Iggy Azalea has been nominated for six American Music Awards, including artist of the year.

Iggy Azalea is leading the way with six American Music Awards nominations.

Those in the running for the prizes were announced today, with Iggy getting mentions in several key categories. She is in the running for the prestigious artist of the year gong, and she also has a chance of being named new artist of the year.

Iggy’s track Fancy, which was a collaboration with Charli XCX, is nominated for single of the year too.

Hot on her heels are John Legend, Katy Perry and Pharrell Williams who are all up for five awards. Relative newcomer Lorde has four, while pop queen Beyoncé Knowles surprisingly only got three nods.

All of those stars will battle Iggy to be named artist of the year, with Luke Bryan, Eminem, Imagine Dragons and One Direction rounding up the group.

Many of the same names are vying for the single of the year statue, with John Legend’s All of Me scoring him a nod, Pharrell Williams getting a mention for Happy and Katy Perry’s track Dark Horse also featuring. Joining them are MAGIC! for their smash hit Rude.

The new artist prize will be handed to either Iggy or 5 Seconds of Summer, Bastille, Sam Smith or Meghan Trainor.

Australian star Iggy has faced some bad press over the last year, with some lashing out at her rapping skills. They didn’t seem to be a problem for those involved with the AMAs as she’s also up for the best rap artist award alongside Drake and Eminem, plus the best rap album gong with the same two stars.

Other categories of note include best male pop/rock artist, which will go to either John Legend, Sam Smith or Pharrell Williams. The women’s version sees Iggy, Lorde and Katy Perry nominated.

It’s a good day for Lorde, whose album Pure Heroine is up for the best pop/rock record gong. Joining it is One Direction’s Midnight Memories and Katy Perry’s LP Prism.

This year’s AMAs will take place at the Nokia Theatre L.A. LIVE in Los Angeles on November 23.
