DiCaprio joins Instagram

Leonardo DiCaprio is promoting awareness about climate change on the photo-sharing app.

Leonardo DiCaprio is the latest celebrity to join Instagram.

The 39-year-old actor, who describes himself as an “actor and environmentalist” on the photo-sharing app, posted his first image on Tuesday – a picture of himself posing alongside United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon before he appeared as a Messenger of Peace at the UN Climate Summit.

“Today, I have the privilege to speak at the United Nations #Climate2014 Summit where world leaders are expected to announce the bold steps they will take to tackle climate change,” Leo wrote in the image caption. “Thank you Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.”

Within minutes, thousands of fans had liked the photo and commented, helping the actor to gain tens of thousands of followers despite being noticeably absent from the popular app prior.

Leo followed-up with a photo from inside the 69th session of the UN General Assembly in New York City, where nearly 200 members of the intergovernmental organisation gathered to discuss world issues.

“This seems like the perfect setting to join Instagram and share this view from the UN General Assembly. What a great honor this is. #Climate2014,” the actor captioned the image.

In a final post before press time, Leo then posted an image reading “100% for the 100%”.

Keeping in theme with his push for awareness about climate change, he explained: “New research shows that by 2050 clean, renewable energy could supply #100percent of the world’s energy needs using EXISTING TECHNOLOGIES, and it would create millions of jobs in the US alone. #Climate2014 #MomentForAction @markruffalo,” he wrote.

The messages follow a week after the actor, who founded the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation in 1998 to address environmental issues, was designated the UN’s new Messenger of Peace.

“Mr. DiCaprio is a credible voice in the environmental movement, and has a considerable platform to amplify its message,” Ban said at the time.
