Mahone: Get used to me

Austin Mahone has discussed his intentions to remain on the map several years into the future.

Austin Mahone thinks people “better get used” to him being on the music scene.

The 18-year-old Say Somethin singer released his second EP, The Secret, in May of this year.

And the teenager is planning on becoming a mainstay in the entertainment industry.

“Whenever people see me, I’m a young dude and I sing, and I feel like they’re just like, ‘Oh, there’s just another teen pop star. He’s going to have a few songs,’ " he told USA Today.

“But I want to be more than that. I want to grow, I want to challenge myself to be better and to be different. I want people to know I’m in it for the long run, so you better get used to me.”

Although Austin is rapidly becoming a pop sensation, the Texan-born star loves the country genre.

And while he works on his first studio album, the singer looks to one country musician in particular for inspiration.

“I grew up listening to Garth Brooks,” Austin shared. “I knew every song he was singing. Watching him perform, I took some mental notes so I can try to incorporate that into my show as well.”

Austin put on a show before Sunday’s NASCAR race, which was hosted at the Chicagoland Speedway.

Even though the star isn’t very interested in race cars, he is happy to perform for a variety of audiences.

“I think it works both ways, you know?” he mused. "The dads bring their daughters to the NASCAR race because I’m performing, and then they watch the racing afterward and maybe they’ll get into it. But it’s the same thing for me — I come to the NASCAR event, the daughters bring their dads and I get to make new fans.”
