Joe Dempsie questioned GoT role

Joe Dempsie didn't think he was right for his Game of Thrones character.

Joe Dempsie worried his Game of Thrones casting was a mistake.

The British actor plays Gendry in the hugely popular fantasy series, based on the books by George R. R. Martin.

The show has an A-list cast that boasts the likes of Kit Harington, Peter Dinklage and Emilia Clarke, but Joe’s initial reaction to winning the part was one of concern.

“The brief was that Gendry was tall, muscular and had black hair. I was none of those things. I was waiting for them to go, ‘Sorry, it’s a mistake, we have to recast!’” Joe laughed to ASOS magazine.

When he knew for sure that the part was his Joe was overjoyed, and set out making the character his own.

But giving Gendry certain skills was an ulterior motive on Joe’s part.

“In the books he rushes into things without thinking. I wanted to make him street-smart. I guess that gives him more of a shout at staying around…” he laughed, acknowledging the fact that character death rate is high.

Joe first came to prominence playing Chris Miles in British teen series Skins.

While success has come easily to the 27-year-old star, he wasn’t so serious about acting when he first started out.

“We’d do a play twice a year, but really the aim was to make your mates laugh,” he recalled.

His next movie project is Monsters: Dark Continent, due out later this year.

Shot mainly on location in Jordan, Joe was left with lifelong memories from his time away.

“We shot this scene where we were flying in a Black Hawk helicopter with our feet hanging out and the pilots doing stunts. I was looking around thinking, never mind the acting, this is something I’m never going to forget,” he smiled.
