Kesha has opened up about what lead her to admit herself to rehab earlier this year.
Kesha is “actually incredibly responsible” when it comes to her career.
The Timber singer admitted herself to rehab in January to deal with an eating disorder. But at the time, the 27-year-old was concerned that people would think she was attending for different reasons.
“I knew people would assume I was here for other things,” she said in an open letter in the UK edition of Elle magazine. “Sure, I’ve written songs about partying, but my dirty little secret is that I’m actually incredibly responsible. I take my music and career very seriously and certainly didn’t land in this situation from partying.”
Kesha went on to explain that after finishing her biggest world tour, she could barely get out of bed. Her body was shutting down and she knew why. She had been abusing herself after starting to believe that part of her job as a singer and performer was to be as skinny as possible.
“The music industry has set unrealistic expectations for what a body is supposed to look like, and I started becoming overly critical of my own body because of that,” she continued. “I had to learn to treat my body with respect.”
The singer had started to become paranoid about the paparazzi taking her photo. She fought back the only way she knew how, through her music, writing songs like We R Who We R. But she began to feel more and more like a fraud as she continued to treat her own body so badly. Following a two month stay in rehab, however, the star felt better equipped to deal with her career and look after herself properly.
“I began to feel a shift in my mentality and really started to understand my own self-worth,” she said. “I could focus on my happiness and not what I looked like. I feel stronger now.”
