Blanchett’s message to Roberts

Cate Blanchett has jokingly warned Julia Roberts she is “coming for her”.

Cate Blanchett tells Julia Roberts to “watch her ass”.

Cate won Best Actress for her role in Blue Jasmine at the Academy Awards, beating Amy Adams, Sandra Bullock, Judi Dench and Meryl Streep.

When accepting her award, she humorously said “Julia, hashtag suck it, you know what I mean?”

When asked backstage about her comments, Cate remained coy.

“It happened in the bar with Ms. Roberts," she told E! News. “And that’s all I’m prepared to say.”

At the Governor’s Ball following the ceremony, Cate refused to explain her comment further – but she did have another message for her friend.

“You watch it, Julia. I’m after your ass,” she joked in a video taken by Extra’s Jerry Penacoli.

Cate, 44, was clearly overwhelmed as she accepted her Oscar on Sunday night.

The Australian actress made a point of thanking every other person who was also nominated in her category, and took the opportunity to insist that films with a strong female cast make money.

“I’m so very proud that Blue Jasmine stayed in the cinemas for as long as it did. And thank you to Sony Classics, to Michael and Tom for their extraordinary support,” she said. “For so bravely and intelligently distributing the film and to the audiences who went to see it and perhaps those of us in the industry who are still foolishly clinging to the idea that female films with women at the centre are niche experiences. They are not. Audiences want to see them and, in fact, they earn money. The world is round, people.”
