Mischa Barton has opened up about being placed under a 5150 hold in 2009, admitting she threatened to commit suicide.
Mischa Barton has admitted having a "full-on” breakdown in 2009.
In June of that year the 27-year-old actress was put under an involuntary 5150 hold, used when people are deemed a danger to themselves or others. She had been arrested for DUI in 2007 and despite intense speculation insisted she was only sectioned because she had a bad reaction to medication used to treat a tooth infection.
Mischa has now opened up about the true story of what happened.
“It was a full-on breakdown,” she told People magazine. “I was under enormous pressure.”
Shortly before she was placed under the 5150 the star’s parents had attempted to stage an intervention. She was catapulted to fame thanks to TV show The O.C. and admits her life span out of control.
“We thought, ‘Work hard, play hard,’” she recalled.
Mischa explained she took a sedative just before she was detained in the psychiatric wing of the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. She passed out from it, leading to the 5150 hold after she later threatened to end her life.
The episode served as a wakeup call and Mischa re-evaluated her life. That lead to her focusing on being healthy and eating right, however she was soon criticised for her changing body.
“It was always, ’She’s too skinny, she must be sick,’” she recalled. "Then it was, ’She’s too big.’ I was never the right weight.
“I’ve learned a lot. I’m stronger now.”
Mischa is now going all out with her career and has shot a TV pilot as well as filmed supernatural movie I Will Follow You Into the Dark.
