Reese Witherspoon learned to be less competitive once she had children.
Reese Witherspoon felt “so confused” before she became a mother.
The Oscar-winning actress has three children, 14-year-old Ava and Deacon, nine, with ex-husband Ryan Phillippe and one-year-old Tennessee with spouse Jim Toth. Reese believes raising a family has changed her for the better.
“Somebody was saying to me the other day, ‘Oh, people get less interesting when they have kids.’ I just don’t think that’s true. I feel like I was so confused before I had kids, I almost got in my own way," she told the November issue of US magazine Elle. "Having kids made me clearer about who I was as a woman. I just wanted to exhibit good qualities for my daughter. I was a little competitive before I had kids – probably really competitive, to be honest. It really made me let go of that.”
Reese graces the front cover of the magazine’s Women in Hollywood issue. Other stars to land a cover include Shailene Woodley, Penélope Cruz and Melissa McCarthy.
In their respective interviews, Melissa reveals that she loves watching Julia Louis-Dreyfus in the US TV show Veep even though the character is the “world’s biggest a**hole narcissist”.
Shailene says she is embracing her single status and is enjoying being a “drifter”.
The 21-year-old actress also claims she is thinking about moving to Amsterdam, or working in a tea shop to get new life experiences.
Penélope offers some life advice in her chat with the publication. The award-winning actress, who has two children with husband Javier Bardem, has learned not to over-extend herself.
“How important it is to learn to say no," she replied when quizzed on the best advice she has ever received. "You’re going to have to put a lot of your time into a project, and you have to know if it’s something you really feel connected with, because it’s not a job you can do like you press a button- no.”
