Paula Patton thinks women shouldn't have to be defined by marriage.
Paula Patton says marriage is never “perfect”.
The actress is married to Blurred Lines singer Robin Thicke and together they have son Julian.
While it might seem like she has an enviable family unit, Paula insists spending your life with someone isn’t an easy feat.
“Marriage is not what you call a sprint, it’s a marathon,” she admitted to the New York Daily News.
“The funny thing about fairy tales is they end when people get married. They never go after that. That would be a different story.
“Not everything in life is going to be perfect. You can’t expect perfection from anyone.”
Paula, 37, juggles family life with a successful career that includes parts in films such as 2 Guns and Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol.
She has the best of both worlds and thinks finding a man and settling down is not the only “right” path to take.
“I’m not a traditionalist,” she revealed.
“I’m not going to sit here and say marriage is the only way to define you. But when people bring up a super-successful woman, it’s like, ‘But is she married? Does she have kids?’ We need to stop being so hard on women, like you’re not enough unless you’re married.”
There was speculation Paula and Robin’s marriage could face a rocky patch when the singer performed a raunchy routine with 20-year-old Miley Cyrus at the MTV Video Music Awards.
Paula has previously said she wasn’t fazed by the spectacle, which involved Miley grinding on her husband in a nude set of underwear.
Robin also thinks there is nothing wrong with putting on an exciting show.
“Miley and I had a blast,” he told Access Hollywood.
“I wouldn’t change anything. She’s an entertainer, and she’s got everyone on the edge of their seat, so I’m very happy for her. All I did was show up and sing. She knew what she was doing, we had a great time.”
