Captain Kirk ‘afraid of space flight’

Captain Kirk star William Shatner is said to have turned down space travel because he was too frightened.

Captain Kirk actor William Shatner is apparently scared of flying.

The Canadian star portrayed the intergalactic jet-setting character in the Star Trek series between 1966 and 1969.

He was offered the chance to follow in the footsteps of Captain James T. Kirk and take off in Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic SpaceShip Two.

However, William apparently turned the offer of space travel down, because he was too afraid.

“He actually said he’s frightened of airline travel – which is slightly disillusioning. Captain Kirk is scared of flying," Richard mused to British newspaper The Sun.

According to William, money was the reason he decided not to take Richard up on his offer.

The star claims he was asked to foot his own bill of £125,000.

“I said, ‘Well, that’s not much, how much do you guarantee to come back?’ And he didn’t have a price on that," William said.

“He wanted me to go up and pay for it and I said, ‘Hey, you pay me and I’ll go. I’ll risk my life for a large sum of money’. But he didn’t pick me up on my offer.”

According to Richard, rock band Muse are the latest celebrities to express an interest in space travel.

Despite their star status, they shouldn’t be expecting any special treatment from the billionaire.

“We have a policy that, however famous people are, they won’t get upgrades or freebies," Richard explained.

“I think Muse can afford to pay their way. We’d love them to go into space and play.”
