Jersey Shore's The Situation realised he was hooked on prescription medication when he "couldn't even get out of bed".
The Situation developed an addiction to painkillers after a Dancing with the Stars injury.
The Jersey Shore star – real name Mike Sorrentino – appeared on the show in 2010, but was kicked off in last place when he failed to impress with professional partner Karina Smirnoff.
Following an injury while dancing, he was prescribed opiod painkillers, but realised during a trip to Australia in 2012 that he had a problem when he ran out of the medication.
“All I had to do was get dressed for a family function and I couldn’t do that,” he told Associated Press.
“The shirt was laid out, the belt, the pants, everything. The shower was on. I couldn’t even get out of bed. I thought: ‘If I can’t do that how am I going to continue?’”
Rumours were going around at the time that Mike was mixing drugs and alcohol, but he maintains these are “definitely false”.
The star checked into rehab in March 2012, where he was given medication treat opiod addiction.
He left in April the same year, but still takes the medication he was given while in the facility and is receiving counselling.
Mike is now a spokesman for Reckitt Benckiser Pharmaceuticals, Inc., who make the medication he’s taking, and he’s also launched programme Reset Reality to raise awareness of opiod painkiller addiction.
Looking back, the 32-year-old realised there were signs he had a problem.
“People would say, ‘Mike’s not the same Mike we’ve seen before,’" he recalled.
“I was suffering a disease.”
Following his stint in rehab, Mike had to return to Jersey Shore for the final season.
It aired its last episode in December 2012 and since then he feels more like his old self.
“A little part of me was like, ‘How am I gonna get through this?’ but if you watched, I didn’t have one drink," he said of the final season.
“The rollercoaster of fame and fortune is definitely a ride in itself but to get to recovery is something special… There is hope out there and you can get help.”
Mike hopes to return to the showbiz industry, but his current focus is on fitness and family.
