Dame Helen Mirren has joked that she is more like her Monsters University character than people realise.
Dame Helen Mirren liked voicing a centipede in her new movie as it gave her an excuse to buy more shoes.
The actress portrays Dean Hardscrabble in Monsters University. The creature has many legs and spends her time teaching her pupils how to be truly scary monsters.
It was a great test for Helen, who hadn’t realised how much fun it would be.
“It’s how I usually look of course. This is a costume, underneath this I have all my feet under [my skirt],” she giggled.
“I say now I have the best excuse to buy as many shoes as I like because I have so many feet.”
Billy Crystal, John Goodman and Steve Buscemi also voice characters in the release and it gave Helen a new appreciation for animations. She was particularly impressed by how well her American co-stars fared.
“And when I watch an animated film now often I close my eyes so I just hear the voice and I imagine them in a studio doing it on their own. They somehow get the variety into their voices, very expressive,” she told BBC.
Helen famously won an Oscar for her portrayal of Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II in 2006 movie The Queen. She portrayed the monarch again in recent play The Audience, which was staged in London. Quizzed on whether it will move to Broadway in New York City and she didn’t seem too keen.
“I really need a break from it. Right now the thought of doing it for a wrong run is quite intimidating. In terms of the energy requirement. It’s tiring and very demanding,” she explained.
