Lauryn Hill checks into federal prison

Lauryn Hill was booked into a federal prison on Monday where she will begin serving a three-month jail sentence for tax evasion.

Lauryn Hill has reportedly begun serving her prison sentence for tax evasion.

The former Fugees singer and mother-of-six pled guilty to three counts of failure to file tax returns for 2005, 2006 and 2007 last summer. She earned an estimated $1.8 million in that time.

According to TMZ, Lauryn, 38, checked into the Federal Correctional Institution in Danbury, Connecticut, on Monday just before noon.

The website reports she will live in “barracks type” quarters amongst the general population in the “minimum security type facility”.

In May a judge sentenced her to three months in jail for failing to pay nearly $1 million in back tax debt. Lauryn will be put on house arrest for three additional months following her release.

About one week ago Lauryn wrote a lengthy post on Tumblr which revealed her anger over the entire situation. In the note she blasted the IRS, referring to it as a “derivative system” of the “institution of slavery [and] colonialism”.

“I shuddered during sentencing when I kept hearing the term ‘make the IRS whole’ … make the IRS whole, knowing that I got into these very circumstances having to deal with the very energies of inequity and resistance that created and perpetuated these savage inequalities,” she wrote.

The star faced up to one year of prison time on each count.

Earlier this year Lauryn requested the judge grant her forbearance. She filed court papers stating “she withdrew from society at large due to what she perceived as manipulation and very real threats to herself and her family". This retreat saw her not earning income, which in turn created difficulty around paying her taxes.

During an April 22 hearing, US Magistrate Judge Madeline Cox Arleo made her position on the matter extremely clear.

“[Ms. Hill is] not someone who stands before the court penniless,” she said.
