Melissa McCarthy has joked that people in Los Angeles look at her as if she is mad whenever she tries to be friendly.
Melissa McCarthy says Los Angeles people look at her “like I’ve asked them to remove their pants” when she chats to them.
The American actress was born in Illinois and was raised to be courteous and outgoing. She still lives by those principles, although she knows some people hate it when she tries to engage them in conversation.
“I’m a Midwest girl. I’m chatty. I’ll talk to anybody. In L.A., that frightens people. You talk to somebody in a line in L.A., and it’s like you’ve asked them to remove their pants,” she laughed to More magazine.
Since appearing in 2011’s Bridesmaids, Melissa’s movie career has gone from strength to strength. She hasn’t been tempted to change the way she looks though, which she’s proud of.
One critic famously called her “tractor-sized” in a review, but she has no problem being a larger woman.
“I’ve been every size in the world. Parts of my twenties, I was in great shape, but I didn’t appreciate it. If I was a [US] 6 or an 8, I thought, why aren’t I a 2 or a 4?" she explained.
The 42-year-old star has two daughters with her husband Ben Falcone and becoming a mother made her stop obsessing about her shape. She also believes getting older has made her realise there is more to life than being on a diet.
The actress appears alongside Sandra Bullock in her new film The Heat, in which they play two mismatched law enforcement officials. Although it’s a comedy Melissa was careful not to portray her character Detective Shannon Mullins in too eccentric a way. She is adamant that believability is the most important thing when making a movie.
Melissa and Sandra get along brilliantly off screen, with Sandra singing her co-star’s acting praises.
“Working with Melissa is like working with a rabid cat,” she laughed. “You have no idea where she is going to go, so you need to let go and just enjoy the ride."
