Katy Perry knew her marriage to Russell Brand was over after making a discovery which she's not ready to reveal yet.
Katy Perry can’t disclose the “real truth” about why her marriage to Russell Brand ended.
The 28-year-old popstar was wed to the British comedian for 14 months before they split at the end of 2011.
Her 2012 tour documentary Katy Perry: Part of Me covered the time period before, during and after her time with Russell. The British comedian is notably absent from the film, which Katy has hinted is telling.
“That wasn’t edited to leave footage out – there wasn’t any footage of him," she explained to American Vogue magazine.
“At first when I met him he wanted an equal, and I think a lot of times strong men do want an equal, but then they get that equal and they’re like, ‘I can’t handle the equal-ness.’ He didn’t like the atmosphere of me being the boss on tour. So that was really hurtful, and it was very controlling, which was upsetting. I felt a lot of responsibility for it ending, but then I found out the real truth, which I can’t necessarily disclose, because I keep it locked in my safe for a rainy day. I let go and I was like: ‘This isn’t because of me; this is beyond me.’ So I have moved on from that.”
Katy was infatuated with Russell when she first met him four years ago.
She was in love when she married him in October 2010, but he changed during their time together.
“[He was] a magical man” she explained. “He’s a very smart man, and I was in love with him when I married him. [He was] hysterical [funny] in some ways. Until he started making jokes about me and he didn’t know I was in the audience, because I had come to surprise him at one of his shows. So he was hysterical to a point. I mean, I have to claim my own responsibility in things. I do admit that I was on the road a lot. Although I invited him time and time again, and I tried to come home as much as I possibly could. You saw that in the movie.
“Let’s just say I haven’t heard from him since he texted me saying he was divorcing me December 31, 2011.”
Since their split was finalised in July 2012, Katy has enjoyed an on/off relationship with musician John Mayer.
She denied this was something she got into to make her ex-husband jealous.
“Yes [I was seeing John, now it’s] over," she stated. "I was madly in love with him. I still am madly in love with him. All I can say about that relationship is that he’s got a beautiful mind. Beautiful mind, tortured soul. I do have to figure out why I am attracted to these broken birds.”
Katy is focusing on herself now. She plans to stay single until she has figured out what makes her happy, rather than trying to please other people.
“I’m not in a relationship, I’m just on my own – I am myself in my own bed. I have to be happy being alone, and I am happy," she said. "I believe that I will be loved again, in the right way. I know I’m worth it.”
