Joel Madden has been asked to leave his Australian hotel after cannabis was found in his suite.
Joel Madden will not be charged after cannabis was found in his Australian hotel suite.
The American star has been staying in Sydney recently, as he appears on the Australian version of talent TV show The Voice.
On Sunday night police searched his apartment in The Darling Hotel, which is inside The Star casino complex. Law enforcement officers reportedly took the steps after a cleaner alerted them to the drugs.
“Channel Nine has investigated media reports regarding Joel Madden,” a spokesperson for the company which airs The Voice said in a statement.
“He has advised us that while police did search his room and found a very small quantity of marijuana no charges are being laid. Police have also confirmed to Nine that no charges will be brought.”
Around five grams of the drug were found on the property. According to New South Wales law, police usually only caution people found with less than 15 grams in their possession.
Joel has now left the complex, which he called home for two months. This was apparently due to the hotel’s strict no drugs policy.
“He was not afforded any special treatment and he’s moved out,” an official is quoted as saying by British newspaper The Daily Mail.
The star has released a statement about the incident on his Tumblr page, in which he admits what happened.
“Sydney is my adopted home and I appreciate the way the NSW police handles the situation,” it reads. “They have informed me there will be no charges. I hope this didn’t cause too much drama for anyone.”
Joel, who is married to Nicole Richie, was in his room when police checked it.
“During the search a small amount of plant product, believed to cannabis, was found,” a police spokesman told dailytelegraph.com.au.
“A 34-year-old man who occupies the apartment was present during the search. No charges have been laid.”
Last year, Good Charlotte rocker Joel showed his support for a medical marijuana bill by retweeting a message on Twitter.
In 2007, the musician spoke about his smoking addiction in an interview with Blender magazine, making comments which shocked many.
“Without cigarettes, I would be doing heroin, probably on a daily basis,” he said.
