Angelina Jolie has revealed she underwent a preventative double mastectomy after discovering a faulty gene.
Angelina Jolie recently underwent a preventative double mastectomy.
The Hollywood actress made the announcement in the New York Times on Tuesday, explaining she went ahead with the procedure after discovering she carried the BRCA1 gene which dramatically increases a woman’s risk of developing breast and ovarian cancer.
In the newspaper article entitled My Medical Choice, Angelina said she finished the three-month process on April 27.
The 37-year-old star revealed that her doctors predicted she had an 87% risk of breast cancer and a 50% risk of ovarian cancer before she made the decision to have a double mastectomy.
“I decided to be proactive and to minimise the risk as much I could,” she wrote.
“My chances of developing breast cancer have dropped from 87% to under 5%. I can tell my children that they don’t need to fear they will lose me to breast cancer.”
Angelina also encouraged other women to visit their doctor if there is a history of cancer in their families.
“I feel empowered that I made a strong choice that in no way diminishes my femininity. For any woman reading this, I hope it helps you to know you have options,” she said.
“I want to encourage every woman, especially if you have a family history of breast or ovarian cancer, to seek out the information and medical experts who can help you through this aspect of your life, and to make your own informed choices.”
In the frankly open piece, Angelina also praised the love and support her partner Brad Pitt has given her throughout the whole process.
The brunette beauty gushed that the Hollywood actor was with her at the Pink Lotus Breast Center “for every minute of the surgeries”.
“We managed to find moments to laugh together. We knew this was the right thing to do for our family and that it would bring us closer. And it has," she said.
“I am fortunate to have a partner, Brad Pitt, who is so loving and supportive. So to anyone who has a wife or girlfriend going through this, know that you are a very important part of the transition.”
Angelina – who raises six children with Brad – lost her mother Marcheline Bertrand in 2007 at the age of 56 after a long battle with ovarian cancer.
