Jennifer Lopez felt as if her “whole world had fallen apart” when she and Marc Anthony filed for divorce.
The stars split in July 2011 after seven years of marriage, with Marc filing to legally end their union the following year.
In her new movie Parker, Jennifer plays Leslie Rodgers, who has just split from her husband. It meant the star had no problem putting herself in Leslie’s shoes.
“[When we started the divorce it] felt like my whole world had fallen apart,” Jennifer explained to People.
“Leslie had just gone through her own divorce. It’s a bad time in her life.”
The film is about a thief who is double-crossed and vows to settle the score. It is directed by Taylor Hackford, who was adamant Jennifer was the perfect person to play Leslie. The singer-and-actress was a judge on American Idol when she was approached about the role, and it was her dogged TV persona that helped her secure it.
“[He] called me and he was like, ‘I have a part for you,’” Jennifer explained. “And I was like, ‘Really? Oh, cool. What is it?’ And he was like, ‘You know, I’ve been watching you on American Idol, and I love that girl. I love her, but that’s not who I want. But it made me think something in this character… When I see you there, I think you never give up. You keep going.’”
The star is proud to be associated with Leslie as she has so many enviable qualities.
“Leslie, even when she’s down on the bottom and everything is bad at that time, she won’t give up,” she said. “She still has a glimmer of hope.”
