Emma Watson was “mortified” when customs agents mistook her for a parentless child.
The Harry Potter star was stopped by US immigration officials at New York City’s JFK airport during a recent trip.
Emma was wearing a backpack and appeared to be way younger than her 22 years.
“Emma was mortified. Not only did they not recognise her, they thought she was a child. It was very embarrassing but she managed to awkwardly laugh it off,” a source told British newspaper The Sunday People.
“The Americans are very serious about who they let in and out of their country. If young kids are thought to be travelling on their own it poses a massive problem.
“Luckily Emma managed to convince them how old she was.”
After the incident, Emma took to Twitter to vent her frustration.
It is certain that she will not carry a certain type of carry-on on her next trip.
“Passport control: ‘Unaccompanied minor?’ Me: ‘Sorry?’ Passport control: ‘Where is ur guardian?’ Me: ‘I’m 22!!!!!!!’ #neverwearingabackpackagain. (sic),” she tweeted.
Emma is thought to be returning to the US to study at Brown University in Rhode Island.
She took two years off from higher education to focus on her film career.
